Dr Deep Das Consultant Interventional Neurologist performed a rare procedure on a 33 year old lady
On 5th July 2015 in Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital
SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT!
Endovascular Mechanical Stent Assisted Thrombectomy, for the first time in India at Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital by Dr. Deep Das MD,DM,Consultant Interventional Neurologist
Ms. Anna Mary Xalxo, a 33 year old lady was admitted in Woodlands with a rare condition called Anti Phospholipid Syndrome, a disease which causes blood to coagulate spontaneously resulting in abortions and venous and arterial thrombosis. She was admitted with a severe headache for few days after a miscarriage. She also had a spontaneous abortion few years earlier. Evaluation with MRI brain revealed a massive thrombosis of nearly the whole of venous sinuses in the brain. She had to be intubated and ventilated. Her condition was worsening which was due to her blocked veins in the brain which was not allowing proper circulation of blood. Sixty percent of such patients usually respond to blood thinning medications like heparin, which she was being given. For others, the prognosis is usually poor. The worsening clinical condition prompted Dr Das to take her up for a procedure called Endovascular Mechanical Stent Assisted Thrombectomy. This was a very high risk procedure as it has not been carried out in India before. This was a very high risk procedure and was carried out after a detailed discussion with the patients relatives. Under General Anaesthesia, a Trevo stent was used to mechanically cut through the thrombus which was then taken out, bit by bit. The procedure lasting a little over four hours could successfully clear the clots and re established blood flow. The increasing brain pressure from the already damaged brain was controlled by decompressive hemicraniectomy. The patient is now stable and making a slow but steady recovery.
She has been diagnosed to be suffering from Anti Phospholipid Syndrome, a rare disease which causes blood to coagulate spontaneously resulting in abortions and venous and arterial thrombosis. There is no report of such a combined procedure being carried out in India previously The patient is now stable and making a slow but steady recovery.

Rare brain surgery gives new life to Jharkhand woman
KOLKATA: A team of city doctors gave a new lease of life to a 33year-old woman suffering from anti-phospholipid syndrome, a rare brain disorder that causes blood to coagulate spontaneously resulting in abortions and venous and arterial thrombosis.
Women are especially vulnerable to this syndrome.
Anna Mary Xalxo of Jharkhand was brought to the Woodlands Multispecialty Hospital on July 3 with severe headache. She fell ill days after suffering a miscarriage.
She also had a history of abortions before the miscarriage.
“She is now out of danger and being monitored round the clock in the high-density observation unit. She’s dully awake, alert and has been put on solid diet as well,” Deep Das, consultant interventional neurologist who performed the surgery, said.
