Overview

Maitreyi Charitable Trust was constituted with a very sincere and honest wish to dedicate its services for the betterment of mankind and society. The thought of taking stride for a very difficult mission had generated from serene love and goodwill.

A brain stroke patient and mentally challenged girl child within the family and friends and acquaintances suffering similarly gave rise to the thought of setting a hospital which would deal with all and anything related to ‘Brain’. Yet the thought was not enough. It had to be a doctor’s world. The founder approached with her dream to Dr Deep Das. A young promising, dedicated Neurologist having skilled precision in Interventional Neurology whom she had a chance to observe as a performing professional. She discovered it had been his realisation that Kolkata and overall the entire Eastern region of India was lacking on a focused and dedicated Neuroscience center and he too had a similar dream to build in Kolkata.

The two dreams merged and modus operandi was worked out. Settler of proposed Trust Smt. Shobha Dutta and her niece Maitreyi Saha both daughter and granddaughter of Lt Narayan Das Basu Mallik convened the first informal meeting on 22nd April 2012 which was attended by Sri Purno Jyoti Roy, Sri Swapan Ghosh and others. Name of the Trust be in the name of the founder ‘Maitreyi’ was proposed by Sri Satyen Kumar Saha, husband of Smt Maitreyi Saha which was unanimously accepted.

A well known businessman Sri Swapan Kumar Ghosh provided his office space on rent at 8/120, Bijoygarh, Kolkata - 700032 which is our present office. Finally the Trust was named as Maitreyi Charitable Trust and registered on 24/04/2012. It’s Chairperson being Smt Maitreyi Saha and 12 other dedicated people like eminent Doctors, ex – Central Govt. officers, businessman, engineers, chartered accountants, teachers and more (refer to Trust Deed for details).

Proposal by Dr Deep Das to have Dr Shyamal Kumar Das, an eminent Neurologist- (Professor and former HOD of Bangur Institute of Neurology) as chief of the proposed hospital and Dr Om Prakash Singh eminent Psychiatrist as Head of Psychiatry Division was also unanimously accepted. Trust decided to entrust the charge of the home for mentally challenged children to Mr. Subir Kumar Mitra who is the father of an Autistic girl child and also has the experience of being associated with organizations for the special children.
The doctor’s team proposed the name of the hospital as The Brain & Mind Research Institute which Maitreyi Charitable Trust (MCT) unanimously accepted. MCT decided to promote The Brain & Mind Research Institute (BMRI).Further in tune with the doctors it was unanimously decided to have 200 beds for Neurology and 60 beds for Psychiatry, diagnostics, opd and more. Apart to that it was also decided that a special home for 100 mentally challenged children would be a part of this project. Under the leadership of Dr Shyamal Kumar Das detailed infrastructural outline from medical point of view for proposed BMRI was designed.

Chairperson and her team identified verified documents for land, signed agreement of sale and made token advance to seal the deal measuring about 300,000 square feet for the proposed Hospital. The Address for the main hospital is 1A, Dr Radha Kumud Mukherjee Sarani, Kolkata 700 019 (comprising of Plot Nos 203, 205A, 207A Rashbehari Avenue, Kolkata, 700 019).

Since the above space is not adequate, another location measuring about 212,000 square feet at 19 Diamond Harbour Road, Joka, Kolkata 700 104, has also been identified, documents verified, terms of sale agreed. Elaborate project report was made in consultation with architects and experts. An estimated approx Rs 3,000/- cr project was made (refer project report for details). Initially the Trustees have invested and given loan to MCT in their personal capacity to proceed with preliminary activities. Unanimously the Trust decided and started to explore to gather funds from various funding agencies. MCT has already initiated Health Awareness Camps at different places.
